Kintsugi

Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. The result is something new from the broken pieces, which celebrates the journey of mending. The pottery becomes more interesting, more beautiful, and even stronger.

Practicing Kintsugi

Kintsugi can be a powerful tool of reflection on a journey of healing. The artist begins with a flawless bowl, breaks it, then collects the broken pieces. The mending process requires great care and attention. Each step of the way, the artist is invited to simply notice what is happening inside of them. The new piece continues to invite reflection on an individual’s journey. The hope is for the artist to cultivate the beauty and strength of the healing journey.
